Miraculous Lady Bug: Hawk Moth Piñata

Do you have a Miraculous Lady Bug fan at home? Are they begging for a Lady Bug and Cat Noir party? If so, the obvious choice for a piñata is none other than the infamous Hawk Moth. At Sew Stitchin Creative, we are going to show you how to make a Hawk Moth piñata on your own with just a few supplies.

What you will need:

  • Pre-Made Pinata- in the shape of your choice, easy to cover up
  • Tracing paper or regular white copy paper
  • Black Cardstock Paper (4 sheets)
  • Purple Cardstock Paper (1 sheet)
  • Glue stick
  • Printer or printed out picture of Hawk Moth (2 copies)
  • Scissors
  • Cricut machine (or scissors)
Note: If you do not have a Cricut machine, you may need access to a printer. Please read directions (step 7 & 8) all the way through before starting project

Step #1: Purchase pre-made piñata

We started looking online for a pre-made piñata with a good shape. It just so happens that this video game controller on Amazon was the perfect shape to be transformed into a ‘moth’ backdrop. Amazon delivered in one day and we went to work!

Tip: If you do choose to get this piñata, make sure you do not overstuff with heavy candy/toys. If you decide that you do not want to lighten to load, then be sure to reinforce the strap at the top so that it does not rip easily!

Step #2: Tracing Paper

Measure the inside image on the front of the piñata to determine what dimensions (height & width) you will need for your tracing paper. We have included a link below if you do not have tracing paper and would like to buy a roll. If not, do not fret, just tape two pieces of regular white copy paper together. As long as you can see through the paper to trace around the controller image, you will accomplish the goal.

Step #3: Tracing the image

Use a pencil to trace around the video game controller image.

Cut out the traced image as you will now be using it as a guide to trace on black cardstock paper.

Step #4: Tracing the tracing paper

Tape two pieces of black cardstock paper together (side by side) so that you have a large enough image to cover the controller print on the piñata. ONLY TAPE the back, as the front will be visible.

Use a pencil to trace your TRACED & CUT video game controller image on to the black cardstock paper.

Cut out the black cardstock traced image.

Repeat this process for the back of the piñata.

Step #5: Covering the Video Game Controller

Glue black cardstock paper onto the piñata to cover the original controller print (front and back).

Step #7: Creating Akumas

Look up “Ladybug Akuma” and upload an image of an akuma into your Cricut Design Space.

Duplicate this image x 20.

Cut these images out on purple cardstock paper.

Tip: make sure you use the “light” Cricut mat so that your paper doesn’t get stuck on the mat.

If you do not have a Cricut machine:

Look up “Ladybug Akuma” and upload an image of an akuma into a program that you use on your computer that will allow you to duplicate this image.

Duplicate this image x 20.

Print out on purple cardstock (or regular copy) paper.

Cut each individual akuma out with scissors.

Step #8: Putting it all together

Take your printed images of Hawk Moth and use a glue stick to attach him to the center of the piñata (front and back).

Use a glue stick to glue the akumas around Hawk Moth (font and back)

Last but not least…fill the piñata with candy, toys or both!

In Conclusion:

You have now transformed a video game controller piñata into a moth/akuma (your choice) with Hawk Moth in the center. Your kids will have a great time breaking this piñata open.
